Service-Learning Time Log

Service-learning activities include your choice of 1) general client mentoring, 2) client financial training and/or 3) Individual Development Account (IDA) mentoring

To ensure your service-learning visit is worthwhile and meaningful, no visit should be less than 1-hour in length.

Devote 10-15 cumulative hours of total "face time" with the clients during the semester. This time requirement naturally does not include travel time.

Journals

Journals play an important role in the production of a successful reflection paper at the terminus of your service-learning project, as they store all of the material from which you will draw in order to analyze your experience. A strong journal is never shy of information: include as much detail as possible, because this will be your only source of data with which to engage your reflections.

Journal Guidelines:

·         Write a journal entry after every visit to the service site using the appropriate form below. Write your entries as soon as possible after each visit (no later than two days after the visit), to ensure an entry rich in fresh detail.

·         Include the date, time of arrival and departure, and your contact person at the project, then provide a detailed, descriptive report of all of the activities that occur during each visit.

·         Include as much detail as possible: often you will not appreciate the importance of events until well after they occur.  The very process of journaling and reflecting will help you to uncover patterns and connections in your service-learning relationship. Record everything in the journal, and wait to sort out the most applicable details once you are working on your reflection.

·         Include your feelings about the service: accomplishments, frustrations, likes, dislikes, questions, fears, etc. You are not merely reflecting upon the experiences and the people whom you encounter at your service site, you are reflecting upon yourself as well.  Be sure to include your reactions, as well as your interactions with others.

Hello,
My name is Danielle Clarke and I am one of the student success coordinators that will be assisting COB students with their writing.  We appreciate the opportunity to tutor your students.  We can certainly work with them on their grammar as you mentioned, but we can also help them at all stages of the writing process if needed.  We take a similar stance to the Writing Center in that we are both trying to improve their current paper and give them the skills necessary to write better in the future.  Thank you so much for your response.
Sincerely,
Danielle

The paper is technical in nature.  I think grammar will be an area you guys can offer assistance.

Brian Lee,

The College of Business recently established a new service for its students that we have named the BASE Center. BASE stands for Business Academic Success and Excellence.  Our services include academic advising, encouraging students to utilize campus writing and speaking resources, and giving students a central reference point for general university questions.

In an effort to better serve our students we are requesting specific guidelines for speaking and writing assignments they encounter in their classes. After reviewing your syllabus, the Investment Research paper in FIN 352, seems like an assignment we may be able to assist students with. I am contacting you to ask if this assignment has any additional information, apart from the syllabus, that we should be aware of, and if there are any problem areas you can identify in your students' performance as they complete the speaking and writing portions of your classes.

Please feel free to respond with any concerns or problem areas you would like us to assist your students with.  Thank you for your cooperation.
